The First Rule Of Fight Club…

“This is your life and it’s ending one minute at a time.” ~Fight Club

I remember the first time I seen Fight Club. It was early 2001, right before 9-11. The world was different back then. Terrorism was something we all were aware of but paid no attention to and no one in the world could foresee the next five years of war we were about to get ourselves engaged in. Although we could not see it at the time, it was the calm before the storm.

The film itself was less of a movie as it was more of a spiritual experience. It was the same for millions of other guys out there just like me. My friends and I would get drunk and watch the movie for hours on end, punching each other in the face to show the strange kind of love that Tyler had taught us.

After 9-11 this film would not have been made. The final scene of destruction would have reminded the overly-sensitive of the attacks on our beloved towers. It could not have been more perfectly timed. To use an old cliché, every once in a while a movie comes along that changes everything. For people like me, this was that movie.

It echoed the thoughts and frustrations of an entire populace of men. Like the women related to the Oprah Phenomenon, the men embraced the teachings of this new and twisted philosophy. It may have been barbaric to the untrained eye, but to those of us who learned to embrace our inner-most primal instincts, it was enlightening to say the very least.

The ideas expressed were not pretty, but the truth often isn’t. The fact is guys like to fight. It is how we bond. It is not uncommon to see two friends punch each other in the gut for a quick laugh. It is a male instinct. All men reading should understand this at some basic level. If for some reason you can’t, don’t worry, all you have to do is look a little deeper.

Seven years after the release of this movie its popularity has not waned. It is the type of art that can only be described as timeless. Even to this day it inspires deep thoughts in those who watch it. Hundreds of years from now it will scream out the mind set of an entire generation of men to anyone who happens to find it in the archives.
